Symbolic Mysticism

I work with Symbolic Mysticism in acrylic, encaustic wax, mixed media collage, and ceramics. Ideas for my work come from dreams, the natural world and it's forms, and science. It celebrates inter-connectedness and themes of transcendence. I'm interested in making images that deal with the ephemeral, immaterial, intangible things that symbolize and express the human spirit - and of the relationship between light, sound, matter, and spirit.

Much of my work ends up as a Circle within a Square. After years of being drawn to making paintings with this particular composition, I finally discovered that among many other things, the circle in the square symbolizes balance, completeness and unity of all life, and of the Infinite. I began making mandalas. Being drawn to that symbolism was pretty cool. I began thinking of these compositions as meditations on the transcendent mystery beneath the symbols.

I was also fortunate enough to be asked to collaborate with a number of amazing, fun, and creative people. My task was to create imagery for the suit of Wands in The Science Tarot deck. Our launch party in 2010 was at the California Academy of Science.
